KEIRA

Keira floated atop the dark, murky water, her body filled with dread.

Because she couldn’t see Nisha anywhere.

See was quite a bold term to start. She couldn’t see much at all. The pitch-black abyss of the sewer water underneath her. A few silhouettes flickering at the side of the tunnel. Her eyes stung, all clogged up with horrid, nasty shit from below. She could hear the echoing cries of the infected, racing down the path beside the water. And she could hear splashing, too. Upstream.

She could hear Theo. Shouting at her. “Hurry up! Come on!”

But there was no trace of Nisha.

Her heart raced. Her body tensed up. Nisha. She was right here. She was holding her hand. And now… now, she was nowhere to be seen.

Which could only mean one thing.

The water.

She was somewhere under the water.

She looked down into that dark pit below. She swore she could see bubbles rising to the surface. And as much as she tried to calm herself, as much as she tried to steady herself, she couldn’t help seeing Nisha sinking, descending, falling further and further below the water.

“You need to hurry!” Theo shouted.

She heard his voice. She looked up in his general direction. And as much as she desperately wanted to get the hell out of here right now… she couldn’t leave Nisha behind.

“Go,” she shouted.

“What? The infected. They’re—”

“Go,” Keira said. “Save yourself. I need to… I need to save her.”

She looked down at the water, and she tried not to think about it again. She couldn’t let herself think about any of it again.

So she held her breath, and she dunked her head under the water.

She hated being underwater. She’d always hated being underwater. She hated it as a kid. Did everything she could to avoid jumping into the deep end during swimming lessons back at school. When she was at the pool with her friends, she’d do everything she could to stop them from noticing that she didn’t like being underwater, which was her least favourite thing.

But they always noticed.

The water was always there.

Waiting for her.

And it felt like everything had been building up to this very moment.

She squeezed her eyes shut. She couldn’t let any more of that nasty shit in her eyes. Probably caught a tonne of diseases down here already.

But she couldn’t keep her eyes closed for long. She had to open them. She had to look. She had to try and see.

But she didn’t hold much hope of seeing.

Not down here.

She squeezed her eyes open. Squinted just a little.

Nothing but darkness.

Something solid sticking to the corner of her eye.

Clinging on.

She kept her lips sealed as tight as she could. She flailed around, hoping to catch a stray arm, leg, or anything.

Just anything.

A limb. That’s all she needed.

She just needed to grab her.

And then drag her back to the surface.

And then, maybe then, everything would be okay.

She flailed around.

She tried to find her.

Tried to find just some sign of her.

She felt something nudge against the back of her hand. Something solid.
